1996 Ford Ranger 2.3 Sudden Hard Starting

Post by terryrc1 »

My well-maintained 1996 Ranger suddenly became hard-starting a few days ago. At basically the same time, I also got a "Check Engine" light. Previously, a short twist of the key and my little 2.3 4-cylinder was purring as usual. Now, it seems to be about a 5-8 second "grind" to get her to start. Once it starts, it runs fine - no hesitation or similar symptoms. I own a basic OBD-II tool which revealed Code P0171. A thorough check for vacuum leaks didn't find any issues. I haven't checked fuel pressure yet (need to borrow a test gauge from one of the local auto parts stores), but I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this issue and what they eventually found as the culprit. During almost 25 years of ownership and 125K miles, she's been incredibly good to me - other than routine maintenance, this is only the second issue - the first was a warranty issue related to the EVAP canister solenoid design which was replaced by Ford with a redesigned part. Thanks for the help. V/R, Ray

Good idea to check if fuel pressure is low before starting engine.
